Why I Chose a Simple, Intentional Routine
Before I transitioned to a stay-at-home mom, I was a thriving businesswoman who was well known for being very systems oriented. I never thought I would become a stay-at-home mom, so the transition was a little harder than I’d ever imagined at first. It wasn’t until I realized that I could treat my duties as a homemaker and mom, just as I would at my job, but it was for the overall health and wellbeing of my family this time.
After becoming a full-time homemaker, we chased our dreams of owning a true homestead, and we actually downsized our home in exchange for more freedom and land. We wanted to live a simpler lifestyle where our traditional values would shine through our home. With less space to clean, I could focus more on cooking our meals from scratch, and I could really dive in on a gentle more natural parenting approach, allowing me to truly lead by example.
There are countless benefits to having a predictable rhythm to your day. With a simple and intentional daily routine as a homemaker, you can better manage household responsibilities while supporting your children’s needs and schedules. As homemakers, we’re not just managing our own time, we’re juggling the entire family’s routines. That’s why having a structured, flexible plan in place is key to keeping everything running smoothly.
Creating a Weekly Homemaking Schedule That Works
When you think about all of the things that need to be done on top of taking care of yourself and everybody else, it can get really overwhelming! At first, I thought “there is absolutely no way I am going to be able to get everything done in the midst of all this chaos.” Over time, I have learned to channel my inner businesswoman and use those tools to dissect the chaos and find a manageable way to fit everything into the schedule with ease.
Breaking Down My Daily Routine as a Homemaker
When I first sat down to really look at what needed to get done each week around the house, it felt a little overwhelming. So, I grabbed a notebook and listed out all the tasks that keep our home running smoothly. Once I saw everything in front of me, I realized I didn’t need to do it all at once, I just needed a better rhythm.
I broke it all down by day, spreading tasks across Monday through Friday. Not only did it make things more manageable, but I also grouped chores in a way that just made sense. For example, we mop the floors twice a week here at Landers Homestead. I do it early in the week after heavy weekend foot traffic, and again before the weekend rolls around.
I also make it a point to clean out the fridge in the beginning of the week. That lines up perfectly with my meal planning and grocery shopping routine, and it helps make sure we’re actually using the food we have, not wasting it because it got pushed to the back and forgotten.
And let’s be real, if there’s a chance we might have guests over on the weekend, I’d rather not be scrambling to clean everything last minute. That’s why I save things like deep cleaning the bathrooms, washing and refreshing all of the linens for Thursdays and Fridays.
Breaking my homemaking tasks into a 5-day routine helps keep our home in order without burning me out. Best part? Our weekends stay open for rest, family time, and all the things that really matter.
Daily Routine: Breaking Homemaking into Manageable Days
Every homemaker’s list of chores looks a little different. But creating a daily routine that divides your tasks throughout the week makes a huge difference. Instead of playing catch-up every day, you can stay ahead with small, intentional steps. Here’s how I organize my own daily routine as a homemaker to make life feel more manageable.
Monday: Reset
After a weekend full of activities, guests, family fun, etc. it is time to reset the floors, so they shine for the week. It’s also time to look over the fridge and pantry, clean things out and make a plan for the remainder of the week based on what we have on our schedule. One thing that’s really helped me stay on top of fridge organization is using clear fridge bins like these stackable organizers I found on Amazon. Having a solid meal plan ensures we won’t be tempted to eat out and we have healthy meals ready to go! I also like using a simple magnetic meal planner like this one so I can quickly glance at our weekly meals. My Monday chores are as follows:
- Dust
- Sweep/Vacuum
- Mop
- Clean Out Fridge
- Organize Pantry
- Order Groceries
- Restock

Tuesday: Fine Tune
Now that our fridge is stocked up for the week and our floors are shining again, it’s time to fine tune the little things like windows, windowsills and baseboards. I’ve found that microfiber cloths make cleaning windows and baseboards so much easier and streak-free. My favorite thing to do is have my google home play a good playlist to match my mood throughout the house as I get things shining. Once done, I move out to the front porch and do a bit of tidying up and enjoy the rest of my coffee or grab a fresh new cup! My Tuesday chores are as follows:
- Clean Windows
- Clean Windowsills
- Wash Baseboards
- Organize Front Porch

Wednesday: Declutter Day
Decluttering is a must, and not just during spring cleaning. Before I had a solid daily routine, I’d go all-in on big projects. My husband would lovingly joke, “I give it a week before the clutter’s back.” He wasn’t wrong!
I’ve learned that no matter how organized your bins and labels are, life happens. Kids toss things in the wrong spots, and over time, stuff piles up. That’s why I set aside time every Wednesday to declutter.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as putting things back where they belong. Other times, I realize we’re hanging onto things we don’t need. That’s when I gather items to donate, sell, or toss. One small decluttering session each week helps keep our home feeling light and peaceful.
- 15 Minute declutter per room
- Reorganize as needed
- Sell items on marketplace
- Thrift store run

Thursday: Bathrooms & Linens
Let’s talk about bathrooms, because I cannot stand a dirty one. It’s just not something I can ignore in my daily routine.
While our teen has the guest bathroom on his personal list of chores, I make it a point to deep clean every bathroom in the house once a week. That includes the toilets, tubs, rugs, and yes even the plastic shower curtain liners. We switched to these washable liners, and they hold up so well in the wash.
I also take this time to freshen up all our linens. I toss in throw blankets, pillow covers, and curtains with the bathroom loads. To avoid synthetic dryer sheets, I use these wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oil. If the weather’s nice, I line-dry them outside for that extra crisp, fresh scent. By evening, the whole house smells clean, and there’s nothing cozier than curling up with a fresh blanket.
- Deep clean bathrooms
- Wash shower curtains & curtains
- Wash bathroom rugs & area rugs
- Wash throw blankets & throw pillows

Friday: House Reset & Bedding Refresh
Friday is for fresh starts, and that includes our home. By the end of the week, the house needs a little love to welcome the weekend. So, I reset our floors again and give everything a quick once-over. It’s a key part of my daily routine as a homemaker.
I want the home to feel ready for whatever the weekend brings, whether it’s relaxing family time or surprise visitors. It’s also the perfect day to wash everyone’s bedding. To keep extra sheets tidy, I use these sheet organizers which fit right into our linen closet. Fresh sheets on a Friday night just hit different. They signal that it’s time to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the fruits of your workweek.
- Dust
- Sweep, vacuum & mop floors
- Wash all bed clothes
- Redress all bed clothes

Flexibility in My Routine as a Homemaker
At the end of the day, you must remember grace over perfection. Sometimes life doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. You must accept that you are never going to hit everything in one day, we don’t aim for 100% perfection at all times because that is unrealistic. Realistically, we aim for at least 80%, but most importantly we give ourselves grace when we cannot meet our goals. Our main focus as homemakers is to bring as much warmth and structure to our home, but with love! Here are a few affirmations I have come up with for myself to live by:
“Homemaking isn’t about perfection, it’s about peace. If the laundry waits or the floors go unswept today, that’s okay. A rested heart is just as important as a tidy home.“
“A perfect home isn’t the one that’s spotless, it’s the one filled with warmth, laughter, and love. Let go of “perfect” and lean into real.“
“Routines don’t have to be rigid to bring peace. Keep them loose but intentional, like a rhythm your home can dance to.“
Bringing Peace to Your Homemaking Days
A daily routine as a homemaker doesn’t have to be rigid or overwhelming. With simple systems, flexible scheduling, and a little grace, you can manage your household in a way that feels peaceful not pressured. The more intentional your routines become, the easier it is to find joy in the little things like clean sheets, organized shelves, and less clutter in your mind and home.
If you’re just starting out, remember you don’t have to do it all at once. Break it up, tweak what doesn’t work, and celebrate what does.
